The Penn State Behrend Lions baseball program continues to gain attention after back-to-back championship seasons. The NCAA recognizes the most successful Division III baseball programs over the last decade based on winning percentage and total wins.

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) released the Division III South Baseball All-Star Team. David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) was selected as the ECAC Pitcher of the Year and shortstop Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) was named the ECAC Player of the Year. Jon Gray (State College/State College) was also named to the First Team as an outfielder.

The Penn State Behrend Lions baseball program released the program's award winners for the 2009 campaign. "We have tremendous people in our program," said head coach Paul Benim. "These honors are voted on by their peers and coaches. This is a high-quality group and should feel very honored."

The 2009 ABCA-Rawlings Mid-Atlantic All-Region Baseball Team was announced yesterday with three Behrend Lions players earning recognition. The Behrend Lions program completed another strong season on the diamond. Behrend registered a 31-13 record, a year after earning a 34-12 mark,

David Miller was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division First-Team. Miller earned a 3.73 GPA in computer science and was recently named Penn State Behrend's Male Academic Athlete of the Year. He is also a four-year member of the AMCC All-Academic teams and has earned Chi Sigma Alpha National Student-Athlete Honor Society honors for two straight years.
The Penn State Behrend Lions dropped a tough 8-5 game against Penn State Berks in the NCAA Tournament Mid-Atlantic Regional on Thursday, May 14 to finish the season at 31-13. The AMCC champions advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time ever after capturing their second straight league championship.

The Behrend Lions placed eight players onto the AMCC All-Conference team including the player of the year, Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville), and the pitcher of the year, David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic).

Penn State Behrend faced The College of New Jersey in the opening game of the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Lakewood, NJ on Wednesday, May 13. The #4 Behrend Lions dropped a 13-1 game to the #5 seeded TCNJ Lions.

Eddie Kessler (Bethel Park/Bethel Park) and Fran Haus (Wexford/North Allegheny) have been named the AMCC player and pitcher of the week for the week of May 11, 2009.

The NCAA Division III Baseball Committee has announced the 54 teams that will compete in the 2009 Division III baseball championship. There were 35 automatic bids, with six bids set aside for teams not in one of those conference and 13 at-large bids to round out the field.

Penn State Behrend finished off Penn State Altoona with a 7-2 win in the 2009 AMCC Baseball Championship on Sunday, May 10 to claim back-to-back conference titles. With the championship, Behrend earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will compete at a region to be determined.

Game Three: Penn State Behrend 11, Penn State Altoona 4 Penn State Behrend put four runs up in the bottom of the first inning. David Miller had the first RBI of the game when he singled home Jon Gray. Miller scored on a Geoff Lang single to put the home squad ahead 2-0. Adam Hartwing followed with a 2-run double and Behrend had a quick 4-0 lead.

Game One: Penn State Altoona 19, Frostburg State 3 Game Two: Penn State Behrend 16, Pitt-Greensburg 2 Pitt-Greensburg jumped ahead early when Mike Battochi's infield single scored Matt Gouveia to put the Bobcats ahead 1-0 after a half inning of play. The Behrend Lions quickly evened the game when Ed Kessler doubled in Jon Gray and the game headed to the second inning tied 1-1. Behrend got the go-ahead run in the second when Ryan Geibel's double scored Ryan Liddle for a 2-1 lead.

The blue and white also have appeared in two consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

For the second straight season the Behrend Lions (28-11) baseball program will be hosting the 2009 AMCC Baseball Championship on the Behrend diamond May 8-10. Behrend captured its second straight AMCC regular season baseball title by virtue of a 16-2 record in regular season play and will be the number one seed, while Frostburg State (24-12, 15-3) is the two seed.

After suffering a double header sweep by Washington and Jefferson the Behrend Lions bounced back to beat Fredonia State 11-8 in a single nine inning game. With the win the blue and white moved to 28-9 on the year and took the three game series 2-1. The blue and white took advantage of two Fredonia errors in the first inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
